The distinctions that there are within the Trinity, are distinctions of relation. 

Today's video is on the Tri-Unity of God. Looking for some answers, Kyle and I went to Trinity Reformed Church to get pastor Van Eyk's thoughts on the subject. This is Faith to Film.

 

Well, the term Trinity is not a word that is found in the bible. The doctrine of the Trinity attempts to capture what the bible says about this God who is one in essence and three in persons. So the bible teaches us that there is one God. Hear oh Israel the Lord your God the Lord is one. It also teaches that the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. And so the doctrine of the Trinity seeks to capture all that the bible teaches. Not so that we may fully understand but that we might understand sufficiently in order to worship.

The distinctions that there are within the Trinity, are distinctions of relation. So, the Father is the one who eternally begets the Son. The Father is also the one who sends the Son on the mission of reconciliation between God and sinners. We also learn from scripture that election and the creation of the universe is associated with the Father specifically.

The Son is the second person of the Trinity, eternally begotten by the Father. The work of the Trinity in redemption is specifically associated with God the Son. He's the one who was sent by the Father into the world and gave His life as a sacrifice for His elect. 

1:51 God the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity who is eternally breathed out by the Father and the Son. He is the one who has associated with Him, the works of regeneration and sanctification. He's the one who changes the hearts of humans. He's the one who illumines the mind. He's the one who exalts the Lord Jesus Christ and brings together the sinner and the Savior. He's also the one who works in believers to conform them to the image of the Son. And the work of the Spirit is not to draw attention to Himself but to draw attention to the Father, through the Son, for the glory of God.
